Surroundings
This series explore the connections between photography and the impact the medium can have on the environment. Specific emphasis was put on aspects such as the use of harmful chemical and the need for mining natural resources. In response to this, I used camera-less photography to work in a sustainable way, whilst commenting on the urgency in needing to alter the way we consume things. Furthermore, I wanted to present how climate change is affecting the whole world, even down to the plants around where we live. This was again to reinforce the importance of changing how we all live as the overtly consumerist and wasteful society we now live in isn’t sustainable for a permanent future.
This work solely uses environmentally friendly techniques or practices as I either used processes that wouldn’t create harm or used regularly analogue equipment, such as photographic paper and cyanotype chemicals, which was out of date and would’ve gone to landfill otherwise. the methods used include lumen prints, phytograms and homemade developer and fixer.
In an attempt to discuss how climate change is affecting every corner of the world, these photographs document plants I found in the local area surrounding my house during daily walks during lockdown.
