Disregard

The main themes this work engages with is the climate crisis, pollution and overconsumption, through reflecting upon the impact these issues can have on the planet and the evidence of them in our natural landscapes. I felt that through drawing attention to the devastating impact waste and littering can have on the planet, it would represent the feeling of urgency which is needed when discussing climate change and the irreparable damage currently happening to the world.

In addition to this, I decided to focus on engaging with themes surrounding 17th century Dutch still life paintings as these paintings embody a number of the political and social issues Iā€™m investigating in this series. These paintings have been described as being a physical representation of the first consumer society being created, and so, the origins of capitalism. As well as being an explicit representation of the start of the prosperous society in the Netherlands, encapsulating their desire for wealth and luxury, using these painting as a source of inspiration allows for a direct correlation to the reasons overconsumption and pollution are issues within the world today.
